
The Newberg-Dundee Police Department's Traffic Safety Team has promoted traffic safety in the community for over 20 years. The four-officer team focuses on several activities, including traffic safety presentations to interest groups and schools.
Radar Speed Information Trailers
The Department curently has two radar speed information trailers. They are placed in business and residential areas with reported concerns about speeding vehicles and conditions presenting a traffic safety hazard. The trailers are sited in areas for a few days' time, followed by some enhanced enforcement after the trailer is removed from the neighborhood. Most of the trailers' use is based on citizens's calls to the Department with concerns for speeding vehicles or other safety concerns.
Motors
Newberg-Dundee Police has two motor officer positions. The officers work cross all days of the week, primarily in areas of pedestrian safety, downtown and business core traffic safety, speed enforcement in all neighborhoods and areas, and assist other officers on emergency calls. The pair works as a team on special enforcement and education assignments, funeral escorts and special events in the area.
Educational Presentations
The Traffic Safety Team has participated in several traffic safety activities over the year. Officers have participated in several presenations with local High school groups and community organizations, promoting traffic safety and emphasis on safety and impressing on drivers to make sober and safe decisions during a usally popular party season has a proven impact on students.
Crash Reconstruction
All four members are on the Yamhill County Multi-Agency Traffic Team. Two team members are entry level crash reconstructionist. Their skills are also used locally in serious traffic crash investigations, yet not within the guidelines to acitivate the entire county team. Team members are also available to assist in major crime scene invetigations.
Drug Recognition Expert
One member of the Team has completed 14 years of sevice to the area as a Drug Recognition Expert. The DRE is court certified as an expert witness in impaired driving cases, involving drugs other than alcohol. The officer has also testified as an expert witness in other agencies' DUII cases, helping the court and juries understand the concept of Standardized Field Sobriety Testing, Drug Recognition and other aspects of impaired driving. The officer has testifed before Legislative committees concerning traffic safety and impaired driving issues.
