Naloxone now available in all City of Newberg facilities
City of Newberg Equips Facilities; Trains Staff To Use Lifesaving Narcan.
October 30, 2023
The City Of Newberg now has the life-saving drug Naloxone (known as Narcan) in all its facilities. Narcan is an effective tool to respond to an opioid overdose. Narcan quickly blocks the effects of opioids on the brain -- allowing a person suffering an overdose to be revived.
Yamhill County is seeing increased overdoses from fentanyl however, opioids also include prescribed medications such as oxycodone hydrocodone. Overdoses are not limited to illicit drug use. Children can accidentally access both legal and illegal drugs; adults can miscalculate doses of prescribed medications.
City employees frequently work around the community at businesses, city facilities, and public spaces. “Our Police and Fire responders are experts in dealing with an opioid emergency - until they arrive Narcan is a safe tool our staff can use to aid someone.” Karen Tarmichael City Emergency Coordinator.
The City partnered with Yamhill County Health to provide Narcan in the facilities and to train staff on its use. The Library implemented Narcan in September and the city wide program rolled out in October as part of the City’s workplace safety and first aid training. Newberg-Dundee Police and TVFR Fire & Rescue already use it in their operational protocols.
