Celebrating Black History Month 2024
The month of February is federally recognized as National Black History Month. It began as a weeklong celebration started by Carter G. Woodson in 1926 and expanded into an entire month in 1976 when President Gerald R. Ford encouraged Americans to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”
Learn more about Black History Month on the History Channel website.
This celebration has always chosen a theme to focus the attention of the public. Themes from recent years include “Black Women in American Culture and History” (2012), “A Century of Black Life, History, and Culture”(2015), and “African Americans and the Vote” (2020).
ASALH is also hosting a Black History Month Virtual Festival all month long with events pretty much every day. Most events are free and feature author talks, panel discussions, and much more. View the schedule here.
This month, there are so many ways to celebrate the contributions Black Americans have made to our country. Find information about events and educational resources on the official site for Black History Month.
The Newberg Public Library is celebrating Black History Month with a featured selection of books of all genres, located just inside the entrance to the right.
