In 2019, the City of Newberg was awarded a Renewable Development Fund grant from Portland General Electric, and a grant from the Oregon Department of Energy to build a solar farm at the City's Wastewater Treatment Plan.

About the Wastewater Treatment Plant Solar Farm

We've installed a 400kw solar farm on City property on S Sandoz Road. The energy cost for our wastewater treatment plant is one of the City's highest operational costs. The facility will provide sustainable, green energy to our wastewater system while saving the City and taxpayers money.

The average annual electric bill for the Wastewater Treatment Plant is $250,000. With the solar farm, the City anticipates saving 14.1% a year with a 7-10 year payback on the capital costs. The project is funded by wastewater rate revenues and grants totaling $400,000.
