(NEWBERG, OR) – The City of Newberg, with leadership from the Newberg City Council, remains committed to developing an operational culture that adopts and cherishes diversity, equity, and inclusion as core values. In January of 2020, the Newberg City Council adopted this goal and have maintained focus on enhancing these values within the City. The adoption of this goal reflected a need for improvement within the City and a dedication to grow, assuring all community members are encouraged to participate and be heard. Leadership is committed to continually taking a critical eye to City processes and finding opportunities to do better.

Within the City, measures and steps are being taken to ensure these values permeate the organization. During the summer of 2020, the City began working with local equity consultant, Tai Harden-Moore, to conduct an equity assessment of the City. This review includes a look into the City’s hiring practices, community engagement, accessibility of information, language used in marketing, and more. The assessment will help inform concrete measures and steps the City can take to ensure a more equitable approach to providing City services in the future. The equity assessment is scheduled to be finished and presented to City Council on March 15, 2021. The equity assessment represents a first step for the City. The use of an outside consultant allows for an impartial view of opportunities to improve the City’s understanding and application of inclusion throughout its culture and operations.

Along with the assessment, our City Manager and Mayor Rick Rogers participate in a local group formed this summer: the Newberg Equity Task Force. The group is working to identify opportunities within the community and working with the City to add the voices of Latinx and other groups to important issues. The City and leadership are committed to listening to residents and community members to identify measurable goals.

City Manager Dan Weinheimer said of the City’s goal, “Diversity, equity, and inclusion work is a journey. The City Council has made it clear that expanding these values within the City is a top priority. I am personally committed to seeing this work permeates the organization. We remain committed to this goal and will continue to work to ensure all members of our community are able to be heard, access resources, and engage in a meaningful way.”

In addition to the emphasis on DEI, the Newberg City Council's goals also include changing the operational culture to one focused on customer service. The City recognizes that these two goals often go hand in hand. Ensuring equitable access to City services and that projects reflect the needs and desires of all community members is a priority as the City enters 2021 and looks towards the future.
