The City of Newberg Public Works Department has partnered with local organizations to expand Newberg’s emergency resources by installing Emergency Water Filtration Units.

In a disaster, if Newberg’s water system is not working, local organizations are prepared to activate their volunteers and open the water filtration units to provide clean drinking water to those in need. 

Public Works will deliver raw water for filtering to each location as needed. Residents will be able to bring any clean personal use containers to a site and have it filled with safe drinking water until the City Water system is working. Funded by an Oregon SPIRE grant in 2020; the City plans to seek additional grants in 2023 to expand the number of stations.

Emergency services are available to all persons regardless of demographics, origin, place of residence, or religious beliefs.

How do the units work?

Raw water is brought to the holding pool by truck. That raw water is filtered through the Hurricane System which consists of 4 clay filters that remove impurities, parasites, and contaminates. About 2 gallons a minute of clean drinking water is then stored directly in the 500-gallon tank until someone arrives with a container to be filled.  The filters will last for 30,000 gallons with spare filters in each unit. The whole system can operate by power, by generator, and by gravity with all the equipment, supplies, soap, disinfection, and such inside each pod.

How much water can the units hold?

Depending on the severity of a situation each location can filter and store 500 gallons of filtered water and have a 1000-gallon holding pool for the unfiltered water. We can repeat the filter and fill cycle endlessly until the water lines are repaired.

What if I can’t make it to the nearest unit?

Newberg could be on its own for a few hours or a few days. Our responders will be working to restore services and help our most vulnerable; the injured, disabled, children, and those needing shelter. In order to do that we need everyone to do their part at home.

  • Have a kit with some emergency supplies including water purification tablets and containers.
  • Know the places in your home that have water you can disinfect such as tanks, water heaters, and ice makers.
  • Have a plan - a friend, neighbor, civic group, or church that you can reach out to and work together.

Where will the water come from?

Newberg has a great network of springs, creeks, ponds, and the river that make up the Chehalem watershed. If the water interruption doesn’t impact our primary water source reservoirs, we can also get water from City reservoirs. We also have mutual aid agreements with neighboring communities, counties, and State Emergency Management; however, those may take longer to reach us depending on the nature of the situation – if bridges are down or other communities are also in need.
