Edwards Elementary Safe Routes to School Plan
The City of Newberg received a $122,000 grant from the Oregon Department of Transportation in 2020 to implement elements from the Edwards Elementary Safe Routes to School plan.
The Edwards Elementary Safe Routes to School Plan includes:
- construction of pedestrian crossing signs
- stop signs
- curb ramps
- crosswalk markings
- install missing sidewalks sections
Installations will take place along E. Sixth Street and sections of S. River Street, curb ramps along E Sixth Street, S. Blaine Street, and S River Street, and fillings gaps in sidewalks along S. Blain Street. Improvements will improve student safety to Edwards Elementary and increase accessibility between the neighborhoods and downtown Newberg. Click here to see the Aerial Concept Plan.
The grant funded project has an estimated timeline for planning through mid-August 2021, securing contracts for work in April/May 2022, and completing the project summer of 2022.
About the Edwards Elementary Safe Routes to School Plan
To ensure the safety of students and reduce barriers for students walking and biking to school, the City of Newberg partnering with the Newberg School District, Yamhill County, Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT), and the wider community has completed Phase 1 of the Edwards Elementary Safe Routes to School Plan.
Safe Routes to School (SRTS) is a program in Oregon that aims to make school communities safer by combining engineering tools and enforcement with education about safety to encourage students to walk and bicycle to school. SRTS plans not only improve safety, they also encourage physical activity, increase access to school, and reduce traffic congestion and motor vehicle emissions.
The Edwards Elementary Safe Routes to School Plan was informed in part by the City of Newberg ADA/Pederstrian/Bike Route Improvement Plan (2007), the City of Newberg Transportation Plan (2016), the Newberg Downtown Improvement Plan (2017), the Newberg Riverfront Master Plan (2019), and local accident history
The plan is scheduled in two phases due to limitations created by the Coronavirus pandemic. Phase 2 will include the vision and goals for this plan and will take place when public health circumstances allow for a site visit and community meetings.
