Bryce Coefield

(NEWBERG, OR) – At the August 17, 2020 City Council meeting, the Newberg City Council voted to appoint Bryce Coefield to the District 4 position on the City Council for a term of September 8 to December 31, 2022. Coefield will be sworn in by Judge Larry Blake Jr. at the September 8, 2020 digital City Council Meeting. The link for the meeting can be found on the City’s website.

Coefield serves as the Associate Director of the Intercultural Resource Center for George Fox University where he’s worked for the past three years. In Coefield’s application, he stated, “I am interested in serving on the City Council because I believe the City Council provides opportunities to offer vision and direction that result in tangible outcomes for the Newberg Community.”

Coefield’s work at George Fox and past institutions focuses on encouraging growth around diversity, equity, and inclusion while developing strategic initiatives. Mayor Rick Rogers said of the appointment, “Bryce Coefield impressed the Council with his passion, experience, talents and skills. We feel he will be a great addition to City leadership and will help to make Newberg a better place. Overall, the Council was thrilled with the caliber of the candidates that applied for the vacancy and hope that the three not chosen will continue to expand their involvement in our community through the City or other in other ways"

When asked about his appointment Coefield stated, “I believe it is both a deep honor and great responsibility to have the opportunity to serve on City Council. Not everyone has the time and privilege to serve in this way and I am aware of the great deal of work that is needed to serve well. As the City Council we hold the responsibility to represent our people to the city and the city to our people. My hope and prayer is that I do this in such a way that communicates care and love. It sounds cheesy but I deeply believe as I Councilor I need to serve out of a place of care and love.”

Newberg is governed by a seven-member City Council. The winner of the November election will determine who will fill the District 5 vacancy on the council and will be asked to take the seat early. Four candidates have filed for the District 5 election: Nicholas Morace, Maryl Kunkel, Shy Summer Montoya, and Mike McBride. The District 1 and 3 seat are also up for elections. In District 1, Elise Yarnell Hollamon has filed for reelection and in District 3, both incumbent Denise Bacon and Adam McGuffie have filed for election.
