Water Line Flushing and Hydrant Inspections
Annual Water line Flushing and Fire Hydrant Maintenance:
Durations of Work: November - May weather permitting
Area: All regions served by City water service lines.

The Public Works Maintenance Division will be performing annual cleaning of the City water lines between November and May.  This involves opening up the fire hydrants to create high water flow to scour out sediment in the lines.  The water is drained into streets near storm drains or rain swales.  This work is part of the on-going effort to deliver safe water and keep the lines clear of sediment.

Fire Hydrants and valves are also inspected at the same time to insure working resources for Fire Services.

Signs will be posted in the areas that are currently being flushed.

Watch for crews in the roadway - drive slowly and allow them room to work safely.

If you have any questions please contact the Public Works Maintenance Division at 503–537–1234.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

WHY IS HYDRANT FLUSHING NECESSARY?

Flushing protects water quality by forcing out sediment from pipes and allows for inspection of hydrants to ensure firefighting resources.  It is a regular part of the maintenance program for your water system.

WHAT SHOULD I DO WHEN HYDRANTS ARE BEING FLUSHED IN MY AREA?

When you see crews in your area, avoid running tap water, the washing machine or the dishwasher.

Drive carefully around any crew working near the street.

CAN I USE MY WATER WHILE FLUSHING IS BEING DONE ?

♦ It is best to use only cold water or no water, if possible.

♦ Avoid using dishwashers, washing machines and plumbed drinking water from your refrigerator.

This avoids sediment being drawn into the plumbing, appliances and water heater of your home.

Don't worry if you accidentally use the appliance.  A few simple steps should help clear it up.

♦ Flush or run the appliance and faucets for several minutes each until water runs clear.

♦ Clean any filters or screens in the faucet or appliance to remove any trapped sediment.

AFTER FLUSHING WORK IS COMPLETED IN MY AREA WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT ?

Tap water may have some discoloration for a few hours. The discoloration only affects appearance; it does not affect water safety and should clear after running cold water through the tap a few times.

♦ To clear discoloration run cold water for a several minutes to draw fresh water through the plumbing.

♦ Avoid washing laundry / dishes until the water runs clear at the tap. Wash a load of dark clothes first.

♦ If water pressure seems low, check each faucet screen for trapped sediment
