City Manager Dan Weinheimer and Mayor Rick Rogers: Statement on Pride Month
Newberg is a welcoming community for all people. We serve our community proudly and without preference or prejudice. There is no place for prejudice or division in our organization. We intend to lead by an inclusive example and encourage full participation of all people in our community life.
On June 7, 2021, the Newberg City Council recognized PRIDE Month with a proclamation. Additionally, the PRIDE flag flies in City Hall and other facilities. These acts highlight an embrace of equity as a core value within the City, but they alone are not enough. Rather, we must work every day to do better. We must encourage understanding, recognize and celebrate the unique voices around us, and acknowledge a simple truth: For Newberg to reach its highest potential, we need to have more representatives of all perspectives and backgrounds involved and engaged.
This past year, we’ve seen words and acts of division become part of the national dialogue. This trend does not represent Newberg and it does not represent our community. At the community level, we seek to solve challenges and afford all of our residents the highest quality of life that we can offer. In local government we work face-to-face, collaborating on our goals to be the best and safest possible community we can achieve.
We will continue striving to ensure all residents feel welcome. As Nobel Peace Prize winner, Desmond Tutu said, “We are made for goodness. We are made for love. We are made for friendliness. We are made for togetherness. We are made for all of the beautiful things that you and I know. We are made to tell the world that there are no outsiders. All are welcome: black, white, red, yellow, rich, poor, educated, not educated, male, female, gay, straight, all, all, all. We all belong to this family, this human family, God’s family.”
Here at the City of Newberg, we recognize the discrimination and struggles our LGBTQ+ neighbors have faced and continue to face. We encourage our residents and community members to celebrate the diversity around us. Together, we can make Newberg a better place for all.
