Sandbags_at_Ikuta-Ryokuchi_Park_North_Gate_20200219When heavy Oregon rains arrive, a little preparation goes a long way. Sandbags are one of the most effective ways to create a temporary "wall" against rising water, helping to redirect flow away from your doorways and low-lying property lines.

If you’re concerned about potential flooding at your home or business, the City of Newberg provides the resources you need to stay protected. Here is everything you need to know to gear up before the next storm hits.

1. Where to Get Your Supplies

The City provides EMPTY bags at Nap's Thriftway at the Service Counter. Address: 112 E 1st St.

2. Filling Your Sandbags

Once you have your bags, head to the central fill station. Please remember that this is a self-service station, so don't forget to bring your own shovel!

  • Fill Site: Jaquith Park

  • Address: 1306 N Main St., Newberg, OR 97132

3. Tips for an Effective Barrier

To ensure your sandbags do their job, follow these quick tips:

  • Don't overfill: Fill bags half to two-thirds full so they can lay flat and nestle together.

  • Stagger the joints: Lay bags like bricks in a wall, overlapping the seams to prevent water from whistling through the cracks.

  • Tamp them down: Step on each bag after placing it to create a tight seal.
