Newberg's Tree Trimming Program keeps sidewalks, bike lanes, and streets clear and safe for everyone who uses them. Overgrown branches can force pedestrians into the road, block access for residents using wheelchairs or strollers, and slow down deliveries and emergency access.
Under Newberg Municipal Code 8.15.100, property owners are responsible for maintaining vegetation along their property at all times. As a courtesy, the City's Tree Trimming Program has been trimming trees along public rights-of-way since January 2022 to help keep these areas clear.
The official tree trimming diagram shows the minimum clearance required by code compared to what our crews trim to. Code requires 8 feet of clearance over sidewalks and 14 feet over streets. City crews trim to a slightly more generous standard, 9 feet over sidewalks and 18 feet over streets, so trees stay clear longer between trimmings.
If work is scheduled in your neighborhood, you'll see signs posted in advance letting you know the City plans to be in the area, followed by a two-week notice, and then a sign when work is actively underway. You're always welcome to trim your own trees to meet these standards ahead of time.
