a table full of a variety of items for sale at a yard sale

As the weather improves, this is a popular time to sort through your unwanted items and have a garage sale. A common way to advertise a sale is to post signs around your neighborhood. Because of the popularity of these signs the City would like to share answers to some frequently asked questions about the placement of garage sale signs.

Q: Can I put a garage sale sign on the street corner?

A: Signs may not be placed within the public right-of-way. The right-of-way is typically the area that includes the street, sidewalk, and planter strip (the area between the sidewalk and street). Signs may not be attached to trees or utility poles. One sign may be placed on the corner of the property owner’s yard, outside of the right-of-way, with the owner’s permission.

Q: How many garage sale signs may I have?

A: During a garage sale a person may have a total of three signs on any one lot.

Q: Is there a size limit for garage sale signs?

A: Yes. Portable garage sale signs are limited to six square feet per sign.

Q: Do I need a permit for a garage sale sign?

A: No. A permit is not required for portable signs.

Q: What if I put a sign in the right-of-way or attach a sign to a utility pole on the weekend?

A: If a sign is found to be non-compliant with City ordinances it will be removed and the violator could receive a citation. The cost of the first citation is $100.

Q: Is there a limit on garage sales?

A: Garage sales are allowed in residential zones for occasional sale of the resident’s unneeded household items. Garage sales that are part of a business or that become a home occupation are prohibited in residential zones.

Q: What should I do with the leftovers from my garage sale?

A: Check out this guide from Yamhill County!
