Trees for Streams Program - Active Now
What is Trees for Streams?
Trees for Streams is a cooperative program between local nurseries and the City of Newberg.
With urban development; stormwater runoff is changed by streets, gutters, and landscaping. This affects stream flows and alters stream routes. Stream banks erode, stream bottoms change from gravel into mud, invasive species (blackberries) grow along the banks, and algae becomes more common. This affects the native species' health and stream temperatures rise.
Government regulations require the City of Newberg to reduce temperatures, pollution, and damage to streams and the Willamette River. One part of the Newberg TMDL Plan is to improve stream, creek, and tributary health through this cooperative program.
How Can I Get Involved?
You are eligible for free native plants through the Trees for Streams program if your property meets these conditions:
- If Chehalem Creek, Springbrook Creek, Hess Creek, or any of their tributaries run through or border your property
- If you live inside of the Newberg city limits
- If you are building a rain-garden to slow stormwater runoff
Send an email to environment@newbergoregon.gov with your plant list or interests. We will contact you about the availability of plants or you can choose from the limited stock on hand. Plant orders are placed in August/September and are generally available for pick up or delivery in February or March.
When choosing a tree, consider the following factors:
- Will the location allow the tree to shade the stream when it is fully grown?
- Can you provide supplemental water to the tree until it has an established root system (typically 2-years)?
- Will the location provide adequate sun for the tree?
- Will the tree require extensive pruning to avoid nearby power lines when it is mature?
- Does the tree attract the type of wildlife or birds you want in your yard?
- Does the tree's leaf color or flowers complement your yard?
