moss prevention without harming storm water run off

Got Moss?

Many of the solutions for killing moss on roofs and patios include chemicals such as iron, copper, and zinc that hurt our streams.  Copper, even in really really small doses, can affect a fish's sense of direction.

Instead of treating moss, prevent it from forming by removing leaves and debris from your roof and gutters annually or semi-annually.  The leaves and debris retain moisture which promotes moss and fungal growth on your roof.  If you need a new roof, consider installing material that resists moss.

If you need to treat the moss, use less toxic products such as those found in the Grow Smart Grow Safe Guide available below.  Use the recommended concentration because more does not always mean better when it comes to pesticides.  When applying a roof treatment, direct the downspout to the soil and apply only during dry weather.  After treatment, wait 3 rainfalls or until there is no visible sheen or residue before redirecting the downspout back.
