Willamette rive with a boat and text that reads

Here at the City, we know we're fortunate to live in the rolling hills of the Willamette Valley. We're fortunate to have easy access to the Willamette River at Rogers Landing Park and to enjoy the natural beauty that surrounds us every day.

This summer, we're taking a dive into programs available at the City to help our residents and businesses be more sustainable, the programs and projects we're working on to lessen our footprint, and taking a look at how each of us can make small changes that can have a big impact. Join us for the next few months for the "Summer of Sustainability!"

Sustainability Programs for Community Members

Watershed Grants

Our watershed grant program is available for schools or civic groups to create stormwater or watershed classroom education projects, projects that create a rain garden or rain swale, or projects to replace invasive plants with native plants.

Additionally, private property owners can apply for grants to add erosion control, add native plants within 50ft of a stream, or create a rain garden or swale.

Water Efficiency Kits

Any resident of Newberg can request a water efficiency kit from our Public Works Department! The kits include a free aerator, shower head, and more. One kit per household or apartment address.

Residential Sidewalk Grant and Loan Program

Looking to up your sustainable transportation game? Sidewalks improve accessibility, increase your home value, and encourage walking. We have a residential grant program and loan program to help residents repair or replace sidewalks throughout City limits.

Business Sidewalk Loan Program

We also have a loan program for small businesses looking to replace or repair sidewalks outside of their property. Help increase foot traffic outside your business and make sure it's accessible for all your customers.

Help Preserve Our Natural Resources

We can all do our part to help conserve our natural resources and live a more sustainable life. Here at the City, we know how important water is to the health and safety of a community. Remember:

City of Newberg Sustainability Projects and Programs

Ongoing Programs:

  • Medication Take-Back Program - free medication drop off at the Public Safety Building
  • NewGrow Compost - Compost is available at $4.50 per garden bag or $10 per cu. yard at the Wastewater Treatment Plant. Healthy soil retains water and helps plants grow!
  • Repurposing old pavement - instead of purchasing new gravel, the City is able to repurpose pavement from old projects which reduces travel delays, fuel emissions, and saves the City money.
  • Recycled Water System - The City sends our recycled water to the Chehalem Glen Golf Course. In 2019 we recycled 28.9 million gallons of water!
  • Converting all lights in City buildings to LED
  • All toilets and faucets in City buildings are replaced with low-flow options when old equipment fails.
  • Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) Plan/Watershed - This program monitors the health of watersheds and our overall stormwater system.
  • ICLEI Membership - The City is a member of ICLEI which gives us access to resources to determine benchmarks for our current practices

Current Projects:

  • Solar Farm Project - Thanks to funds from a Solar Clean Energy Development Grant, we're installing solar panels at the Wastewater Treatment Plant. This project is projected to be complete by September 2021
  • 2020 Sewer Rehab Project - replacing 4491 feet of wastewater main and lateral line and 270 feet of water mainline. This project fixes leaks and broken pipes, improving the City's water efficiencies
