About Safety Town
Safety Town is now established in 38 countries. Many communities around the U.S. have such a program. A Safety Town can be found as far back as 1937 in Mansfield, Ohio. The National Child Safety Center was founded in 1964 and helps communities to establish their own Safety Town. Some of the Safety Towns around the U.S. include: Greensboro, NC; Evanston, IL; Hunstville, TX; Santa Barbara, CA; East Meadow, NY; and Peachtree City, GA. Locally, you can find Safety Town in such places as: Tigard, Tualatin Hills Park and Rec District, Eugene, Molalla, Gladstone, Salem-Keizer, Canby, North Clackamas, and Milwaukie.
In researching the various safety camps, different organizations partner to bring Safety Town to their communities. In Newberg, NDPD and Chehalem Park and Recreation have partnered and have worked to keep costs affordable to all participants. Community and business donations largely fund the materials and costs. NDPD and CPRD absorb most of the man hours and labor involved in planning, organizing, and implementing. Middle school and High school volunteers work as the counselors. NDPD records/dispatch employees work the 911 station. Various other volunteers offer their hours to bring this event to Newberg-Dundee.
