What we are doing:
The City of Newberg promotes water conservation and prevention of pollution to our water sources. The City owns the land where the wells and springs are located. These locations are in largely undeveloped and unthreatened areas. The land adjacent to the well field is leased with restrictions designed to protect the ground water from over use and contamination.
The new recycled water system installed in 2008 has further reduced the draw on our drinking water by 350,000 gallons a day with the potential for other irrigation customers to connect to the system.
What you can do:
Water is a valuable resource. Everyone can participate in conserving water by taking the following steps:
Let you lawn grow higher. Taller grass will reduce evaporation.
Limit sprinkler use to 20 minutes every other day.
Native shrubs & trees do not require water during the summer.
Consult a gardening book to find out which plants actually need water.
Water before 9am and after 5pm to avoid evaporation.
Use a broom not a hose, to clean sidewalks and driveways.
Don't leave the faucet running while brushing teeth, shaving or rinsing food.
Use dishwashers and cloths washers only with a full load and at night when demand is lower.
Check for leaks in faucets, toilets and pipes especially around sprinkler systems.
Install new water smart fixtures in your home.
