Tree Trimming / Minimum Clearance

                     IS IT TIME TO TRIM
                 YOUR TREES & SHRUBS?

Many of Newberg’s streets and sidewalks are lined with trees and shrubs, which enhance our home, neighborhoods, and community. Fall is a good time to prune your trees and shrubbery as it prepares them for winter and colder temperature. It is also easier to prune with most of the leaves having fell off.

Overgrowth can be hazardous!
Overgrown trees and shrubs can pose serious potential safety hazards. Sidewalks overgrown by trees and shrubs can:
·        Force pedestrians to use the street or find an alternate path to avoid interference from low limbs and overgrown shrubs,
·        Present potential physical injury hazards to pedestrians,
·        Block vision for drivers and pedestrians at intersections, and,
·        Cause damage to the sidewalks from roots and tree trunks.
Untrimmed trees and shrubs that abut a street can:

·        Obstruct street signs,
·        Block drivers’ vision,
·        Damage vehicles,
·        Prevent vehicles from parking or stopping next to the curb and,
·        Force taller vehicles to drive down the center of the road.

All of these have the potential to cause or contribute to accidents and serious injuries.

Property owners and residents are asked to trim their trees and shrubs to conform with clearance requirements.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO?
To provide for public safety, City of Newberg Code of Ordinances, Section 95.34, requires “owner or person in charge of property that abuts upon a street or public sidewalk, to keep all trees and bushes on his premises, including the adjoining parking strip, trimmed to a height of not less than eight (8) feet above the sidewalk, and not less than fourteen (14) feet above the roadway.”
CITY OF NEWBERG CODE OF ORDINANCES SECTION 95.34

The above diagram shows the street and sidewalk clearance requirements. City personnel will be placing notices on the doors of those properties not in compliance with clearance requirements of the City Code. Residents and property owners are asked to insure that trees and shrubs on their properties meet the clearance requirements.

THANK YOU FOR HELPING KEEP NEWBERG’S STREETS AND SIDEWALKS SAFER FOR EVERYONE!
