Early Literacy is what children know about reading and writing before they learn to read and write. Here are six skills children should know to get ready to learn to read and write:
Print Motivation is having an interest in and an enjoyment of books.
Phonological Awareness is the ability to hear and play with the smaller sounds in words. It includes activities that work with rhyme, words, syllables, and initial sounds.
Vocabulary is knowing the names of things.
Narrative Skills is the ability to describe things and events and tell stories.
Print Awareness is noticing print in the environment, knowing how to handle a book, and understanding how to follow the words on a page.
Letter Knowledge is knowing that letters are different from each other, that the same letter has an upper and lower case form, and that each letter has a name and is related to specific sounds.
