Cultural District: Development Plans & Activities

Share

Public Meeting,   Wednesday, January 18, 2012,   6:30 pm,   Newberg Public Library

Learn more about the plans for the Cultural District and weigh in with your thoughts.

In the center of Newberg, a place is being reborn. For years, the area surrounding the Newberg Public Library and Central School has been a civic destination for the community. With the development of the Chehalem Cultural Center and Rotary Centennial Park, use of the area has continued to grow. Today, along with the library, this area has become known as the Newberg Cultural District.

The vision of the City of Newberg, Chehalem Park and Recreation District, Newberg Downtown Coalition, neighbors and stakeholders is to identify and strengthen the cultural district as a gathering place where people can discover the literary, artistic, and historical culture of the area, attend a class or program, check out books, view an exhibit, participate in a community event, or simply sit on a bench and visit with a friend.

How Did This All Get Started:

In the development of the Chehalem Cultural Center some discussion had taken place regarding the outdoor space between the Center and the Newberg Public Library. A circular plaza had been put on preliminary plans, but it hadn't been decided upon or vetted thoroughly with the community or all the property owners in the area.  It was just an early idea.

In summer 2010, the City of Newberg, the Chehalem Park and Recreation District (CPRD), the primary landowners in the district, and the Newberg Downtown Coalition (NDC), hired Project for Public Spaces (PPS) to help develop a plan for the outdoor areas surrounding the Library and Cultural Center.  PPS is a design firm that specializes in encouraging communities to develop public spaces that are comfortable, have a good image, are accessible, engage people in activities, and are sociable spaces.   PPS was charged with developing a conceptual plan for the area.

The City, CPRD, and NDC facilitated a number of community meetings with PPS in fall 2010 and spring 2011. The resulting document from PPS, while it has not been adopted formally by either the City or CPRD, is a conceptual plan that can be used as a basis for the final plan. Many details need to worked out and some basic issues, such as parking for the district, are still in discussion. But the PPS process brought out a variety of ideas to make the Cultural District a destination as well as a neighborhood resource and expanded the vision of what the area could become.
