Child Safety Seat Inspections

The Newberg Fire Department is the Child Safety Seat Distribution Center for Yamhill County. We provide seats, at a discounted rate, to low income/government assisted families. We also provide child safety seat installation inspections as well as teach you how to properly install and use your childs seat.

Every odd number month, we hold a child safety seat clinic at the downtown fire station on the first Thursday from 5p to 7p.  On the even number month, we hold a clinic at our Springbrook Fire Station on the first Saturday from 9a to 11a.

Attached is our clinic schedule for 2011.

We are also available for individual appointments if the clinic date and/or time does not work for you. Please contact Jill Dorrell, Janet Olin, Kathy Roberson, or Jessica Fettig at 503-537-1230, option 2, to schedule an appointment.

We are very happy to announce that Newberg-Dundee Police have added two technicians to their roster; Officer Huntley Miller and Officer Drew Boggs.

Law

Oregon law assists drivers in the decision of how to properly restrain and protect children in motor vehicles. When children are properly restrained it significantly decreases the severity of injuries, and number of fatalities that occur in a crash. Oregon¹s law reflects the national best practices resommendations.
ractice.

Child Restraints
  • Child passengers must be restrained in an approved child safety seat until they weigh 40 pounds.
  • Infants must ride rear facing until they reach both one year of age AND 20 pounds.
Booster Seats
  • Children over 40 pounds must use a booster seat until they are age 8 or 4’9” in height.
  • The booster seat requirement does not apply when the rear seat of the vehicle is equipped only with lap belts, provided the child is secured by the lap belt.   However, it is strongly recommended to NOT use a lap only belt with booster seats if a lap/shoulder belt is availalbe.
  • See the 5 Step test below.
Safety Belts
  • A child taller than 4’9” or age 8 or older must be properly secured with the
    vehicle’s safety belt.
  • The child is properly secured if the lap/shoulder belt is positioned low across the thighs and the shoulder belt is positioned over the collarbone and away from the neck.

Failure to use safety belts or child restraints is a Class D traffic violation (ORS 811.210 and 811.215, effective July 1, 2007)
