Trees for Streams

Trees for Streams program will re-open in September 2012

If you have a stream running through or bounding your property, you are eligible for free trees through a City partnership with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).  The program is open to all streamside properties in the City Limits, Urban Growth Boundary, or within 1 river mile of the City including non-residential properties.

What types of trees are available?  The menu to the right has a link to photos of trees that have been available in the past.  The tree, 4 to 6 feet in height, are in tall 1-gallon pots to maximize root growth.  When planted, the longer roots create a greater survival rate because they are below the roots of the surrounding grass.

Which Tree is Best for Your Property?
(1)  Will the location allow the tree to shade the stream when it is fully grown?
(2)   Can you provide supplemental water to the tree until it has an established root system?
(3)   Will the location provide adequate sun for the tree?
(4)   Will the tree require extensive pruning to clear overhead power lines when it is mature?
(5)   Does the tree attract the type of wildlife or birds that you want in your yard?
(6)   Is the tree's leaf color or flowers an asset to your current yard?

How Do You Plant and Care for Your Tree?
There are many references for how to plant and care for your trees including those that we have available for download on this website.  Another way to learn how to plant and care for your trees is to volunteer with the Greater Yamhill Watershed Council, SOLV, or Friends of Trees.

This program is a partnership between the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) Northwest Oregon Restoration Partnership and the City.  Please call Sonja at  503-537-1282 if you have any questions about Trees for Streams.  If you are interested in volunteering with the BLM’s Northwest Oregon Restoration Partnership, call Denise at 503-322-0002.
