On Wednesday, February 3, about 60 people gathered for a ribbon cutting for the new downtown gateway sign. Mayor Andrews, GFU President Robin Baker, and Newberg Earlybird Rotary Foundation President John Bridges cut the ribbon.
"This was a very special project that Newberg should be proud of," said Barton Brierley, Newberg Planning and Building Director. "The sign says a lot about the community: we care about our past, our present, and our future. The sign was a strong cooperative effort with GFU, Newberg Earlybird Rotary, the Chehalem Valley Chamber of Commerce, the Newberg Downtown Association, the Newberg Downtown Revitalization Committee, and other community members. The sign was funded 80% with donations ($40,000) and 20% (less than $10,000) with tourism dedicated transient room tax revenues. Even the land ended up not costing the City due to some creative arrangements."
