The U.S. Sister Cities program began in 1956 when President Dwight D. Eisenhower proposed a “People-to-People” citizen diplomacy initiative. The idea of the program was to promote peace through mutual respect, consideration and collaboration of individuals and communities to transcend national and political margins. This is accomplished by engaging in meaningful exchanges of ideas, culture, and people.
A sister city relationship is a publicly approved, long-term partnership between two communities which becomes official through a signing ceremony by elected officials. These partnerships are unique in their potential to engage several sectors of a community, including local government, businesses, educators, students, and other citizens through varied connections and projects.
The City of Newberg honors and cherishes the friendships shared with Asago City, Japan and Poysdorf, Austria through the bonds of city sisterhood and looks forward to a long future of exchanges and strengthened relations.
