Four Yamhill County cities received the "Chairperson's Choice Award" from the Mid-Willamette Valley Council of Governments for their cooperation in building inspection services. Newberg, Dayton, Dundee, and Lafayette were recognized for their innovative agreement in providing cooperative building inspection services. Under the agreements, Newberg staff provide building plan review and inspection services for construction activities in the other cities. The cities collect the plan review and inspection fees, and reimburse Newberg for its costs.
"It has been a real win-win for all involved," said Barton Brierley, Planning and Building Director for Newberg. "None of the three other cities could afford to have a Building Official on staff. Newberg has very qualified staff who are able to handle simple jobs and more complex projects such as the Allison Inn. The agreements have allowed us to keep qualified inspectors on staff to serve Newberg. Overall, builders and homeowners in the other cities have been pleased with the services they receive."
Although building activity has been in Dundee and Lafayette largely has been small residential and commercial projects, the Dayton School District's bond passage has resulted in construction of several school facilities. Newberg building staff is lending its expertise in reviewing and inspecting these more complex facilities.
The Mid-Willamette Valley Council of Governments, in which the cities participate, made the award at their annual banquet January 20, 2010.
